Galway City Museum

Galway City Museum was founded in the mid-1970s and was originally located in Comerford House beside the Spanish Arch.

In April 2007 a new purpose built museum building was opened, behind the site of the old museum at Comerford House. The new Galway City Museum project was the initiative of Galway City Council to advance the cultural and heritage life of Galway City.

Galway City Museum invites you to explore it’s collections, exhibitions and online learning resources. Visitors to the museum can enjoy current exhibition highlights including Keepsakes | Cuimhneacháin (on-line only); MONUMENT (developed in partnership with Galway 2020, former European Capital of Culture);  Keepers of the Gael | Caomhnóirí na nGael; Revolution in Galway, 1913-23; The Wild Atlantic – Sea Science and The Galway Hooker.

Recipient of TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for ten years running Galway City Museum has also secured Full Accreditation status from the Heritage Council’s Museum Standards Programme for Ireland – meeting 34 out of 34 wide ranging museum good practice standards.
